Seated at his console in the Reliant's bridge, Stulmin's eyes were wide and he was unaware that he was speaking. It was if he'd left his voice running, unattended, repeating a litany over and over. "Holy Mother of the Universe, Who gave birth to all before the birth of Good and Evil," he chanted, "Holy Mother of the Universe..." He paused, mouth agape, staring into one of the displays on his console, then, still unaware, resumed, "Oh, Mother of the Universe..."

"Knock it off and tend to your duties, Stulmin!" Volnath growled. "Things are bad enough without you mumbling your prayers like a child."

On the display before him, Stulmin was watching Daric and the four bots marching relentlessly toward the open hatch, and — just beyond — Apheron's ship. He saw the metal bars swinging from their hands. "Oh, Holy Mother..."

"Can it!" shouted Volnath.

Stulmin, suddenly aware of his captain but still almost incoherent, pointed to the screen in front of him. "Look, look, look..." he managed, "...cargo bay, look..."

Impatiently Volnath switched one of his own displays to a cargo bay camera, and swore under his breath as it showed him Shanni's body lying on the deck. "Apheron!" He reached for the camera controls to get a closer look. "That meddling fool!" Volnath found the zoom, focused the view on Shanni's face. "A member of my crew!" On the monitor, Shanni stirred. "At least she's not dead."

Volnath leaned back, staring darkly at the monitor. "That interfering egomaniac has caused an injury to a member of my crew!" He swore again.

"No, look, look!" Stulmin grunted. "cargo bay..."

Puzzled, Volnath snapped the display to another camera, and now he, too, saw the scene that so benumbed Stulmin. "Oh, no! Not on my ship!" he whispered, filled with foreboding. Without taking his eyes off the display, he shouted, "Kegler, look at the docking bay monitors!" Then to himself, he swore again and shook his head. "The major has the temper of a viper, and that craft of his could wipe out a city, let alone the Reliant! And nobody challenges Apheron. Nobody!"
